The first step in the Pittsburgh Climate Initiative was to determine the amount of greenhouse gases Pittsburgh emits annually, a study that was conducted in collaboration with the Green Building Alliance, Clean Air-Cool Planet and the Heinz School at Carnegie Mellon University.
Next, municipal, community, business and higher education leaders were asked how their organizations could reduce emissions in their specific areas. As a part of the community discussion, eigtht town-hall meetings were conducted in which Pittsburgh residents offered their ideas on how the city could reduce greehouse gases. Click here for a report on those suggestions.
The Green Government Task Force then reviewed all the suggestions submitted and created an action plan, which has been included in a resolution now under consideration by City Council. The proposed ordinance would mandate changes to city government policy and operations while endorsing a series of recommendations for reducing greenhouse gases in the community as well as the business and higher educations areas.
To implement the recommendations, the Green Government Task Force will rely on four subcommittees, each focused on achieving reductions in their specific area:
| AREA | SUBCOMMITTEE |
|---|---|
| Municipal | City of Pittsburgh Sustainability Committee |
| Community | Community Climate Coalition |
| Business |
Business Climate Coalition |
| Higher Education | Higher Education Climate Coalition |
