Pittsburgh emitted 6.6 million of tons of carbon dioxide in 2003, according to study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University. To reach its goal, Pittsburgh must eliminate 1.3 million tons of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2023.

Pittsburgh Climate Protection Initiative

The Pittsburgh Climate Initiative is a collaborative effort designed to lead Pittsburgh’s residents, businesses, government and institutions of higher learning in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Unless action is taken now to reduce these heat-trapping emissions, Pittsburgh could experience significant and irreparable consequences from climate change.

That’s why the City of Pittsburgh has established a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2023.

To achieve this goal, the Green Government Task Force solicited recommendations and compiled an action plan, which has been submitted to City Council for approval.
