The City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewage Authority, the PPG Zoo and Aquarium and the Sports and Exhibition Authority have agreed to purchase 10 percent of their energy needs from renewable resources, eliminating more than 7,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

How Can Municipal Government Make a Difference?

From building codes and recycling legislation, governments wield significant influence in the amount of greenhouse gases a community emits. How government conducts its operations can have a meaningful impact, too.

The Green Government Task Force has submitted to City Council a series of short-term (less than 2 years), medium-term (2 to 5 years) and long-term (more than 5 years) recommendations on how City of Pittsburgh government can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
